The Warm-Up to Kilimanjaro

4 Days | Gradual Climb • Crater Rim Views • Stunning Scenery

Overview

Mount Meru (4,566m) is Tanzania’s second-highest peak and the perfect warm-up for Kilimanjaro, or a rewarding trek on its own. Located in Arusha National Park, the trek offers incredible biodiversity, stunning views of Kilimanjaro, and a dramatic crater rim walk.

Unlike Kilimanjaro’s barren slopes, Meru is lush and alive with wildlife. You may see buffalo, giraffe, colobus monkeys, and even elephants from the trail. The final ascent along the crater rim at sunrise, with Kilimanjaro floating on the clouds, is one of Africa’s great mountain moments.

Two nights in huts provide comfortable accommodation, and the 4-day itinerary allows for proper acclimatization.

Itinerary Details

Day 1: Arrival – Arusha

Jambo! Welcome to Tanzania.

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Your Blue Eagle representative will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in Arusha (approx. 1 hour).

Afternoon: Meet your lead guide for a full briefing. We’ll check your gear, answer questions, and discuss the days ahead. Your guide will explain what makes Mount Meru special—the wildlife, the views, and the crater rim walk.

Evening: Enjoy a welcome dinner and get a good night’s rest. Tomorrow, the adventure begins.

  • Accommodation:Arusha Planet Lodge or similar
  • Meals:Dinner
  • Elevation:1,500m → 2,500m
  • Distance:8 km
  • Hiking Time:4-5 hours
  • Habitat:Rainforest
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Morning: After breakfast, drive to Arusha National Park (approx. 1 hour). The park entrance is at Momella Gate, nestled against the lower slopes of Mount Meru.

Registration: Complete park formalities at the gate. Your guide will arrange permits while you meet your park ranger—an armed ranger accompanies all treks on Meru due to wildlife.

The Trail: Begin your ascent through lush montane forest. The path is well-maintained and gently sloping. This is one of the most beautiful forest hikes in East Africa.

Look for:

  • Colobus monkeyswith their distinctive black and white coats swinging through the canopy
  • Buffalograzing in clearings (keep distance—your ranger will guide you)
  • Giraffesappearing unexpectedly through the trees
  • Birdlifeincluding turacos, hornbills, and the colorful Hartlaub’s turaco

Lunch: Picnic en route at a scenic clearing.

Wildlife Alert: Arusha National Park is home to buffalo, elephant, giraffe, warthog, and many antelope species. Your ranger will keep you safe while allowing close viewing.

Arrival Miriakamba Hut: The hut sits on a ridge at 2,500m with stunning views across the Momella Lakes and the plains toward Kilimanjaro. On clear days, the mountain seems close enough to touch.

The Hut: Miriakamba is a comfortable A-frame hut with bunk beds, mattresses, and a separate dining area. Solar lighting provides basic illumination.

Afternoon: Rest, hydrate, and enjoy the views. The setting sun often paints Kilimanjaro in shades of pink and orange.

Evening: Dinner in the hut’s dining area. Your cook prepares hot, nutritious meals. Early bedtime—tomorrow is longer.

  • Accommodation:Miriakamba Hut (dormitory, shared facilities)
  • Elevation:2,500m → 3,550m
  • Distance:5 km
  • Hiking Time:3-4 hours
  • Habitat:Moorland
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Morning: After breakfast, continue your ascent. The trail leaves the forest and enters open moorland—a dramatic transition.

Vegetation Change: Trees disappear, replaced by giant heather, proteas, and eventually the iconic giant groundsels (senecios) and lobelias. These plants, adapted to high-altitude life, look like something from another planet.

Views: As you climb, look back for expanding views of the Momella Lakes, the plains below, and Kilimanjaro dominating the eastern horizon.

The Trail: The path climbs steadily through rolling moorland. The gradient is manageable—take it slowly.

Lunch: Picnic en route at a scenic viewpoint.

Wildlife: You may see klipspringer (small antelope) bouncing across rocks or hear the calls of birds unique to this altitude.

Arrival Saddle Hut: Saddle Hut sits at 3,550m, nestled in a valley below the crater rim. The setting is dramatic—rocky, exposed, and stunning.

The Hut: Saddle Hut is smaller and more basic than Miriakamba, but still comfortable. It’s your home for the night before summit day.

Afternoon: Rest and acclimatize. The altitude is noticeable—move slowly. Your guide will brief you on summit night:

  • Wake-up time:Around midnight
  • What to wear:Layers, warm hat, gloves

  • Distance:10 km total
  • Hiking Time:8-10 hours

Summit Day – The Moment You’ve Waited For

Midnight – Wake Up: Tea and biscuits are served. Dress quickly—it’s cold. Your guide checks that everyone is ready.

1:00 AM – Departure: Headlamps on, you begin the final ascent. The trail climbs steeply up the crater wall. Move slowly—”pole pole.”

The Ascent (3-4 hours):

  • The path is steep switchbacks up loose scree.
  • Your guide sets a rhythm: 20-30 steps, then brief rest.
  • The stars are incredible—the Southern Cross hangs overhead.

5:00 AM – The Crater Rim: You reach the crater rim. The sky begins to lighten in the east. Ahead, the true summit—Socialist Peak—is visible along the rim.

The Rim Walk (1-2 hours): This is what makes Meru special. You’ll walk along the crater rim, with the sheer drop into the crater on one side and the outer slopes on the other. The views are breathtaking.

Sunrise: As the sun rises, watch Kilimanjaro emerge from the clouds, floating on the horizon. This moment alone is worth the climb.

6:30 AM – 7:00 AM: Socialist Peak (4,566m) – You’ve reached the summit of Mount Meru! Celebrate, take photos, breathe. Your guide will help with photos.

The Crater: Peer down into the active crater—steam vents rise from the depths. The last eruption was over 100 years ago, but the mountain is still considered active.

Time at Summit: 15-20 minutes maximum. The altitude and cold make extended stays difficult.

Descent Begins: Retrace your steps along the crater rim, then descend steeply to Saddle Hut (2-3 hours).

Saddle Hut: Rest, rehydrate, and have a light lunch. You’ll be tired but exhilarated.

Continue to Miriakamba Hut (2-3 hours): Descend through moorland and back into forest. The air thickens with oxygen—breathing becomes easier.

Arrival Miriakamba Hut: Your hut for the night. Hot water for washing! Celebration atmosphere!

Evening: Celebration dinner. Share stories with fellow trekkers. You’ve earned it.

  • Accommodation:Miriakamba Hut (dormitory, shared facilities)
  • Elevation:2,500m → 1,500m
  • Distance:8 km
  • Hiking Time:3-4 hours
  • Habitat:Rainforest
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch

Final Descent: After breakfast, begin the final descent through rainforest. The trail is familiar now, but the sounds of birds and monkeys feel different—you’re noticing more.

Wildlife Watch: Keep eyes open for colobus monkeys, buffalo, and maybe even elephants. Your ranger remains alert.

Arrival Momella Gate: Complete park formalities and receive your summit certificate—a green certificate from Arusha National Park proving you reached Socialist Peak.

Celebration: Your driver meets you and transfers you back to your Arusha hotel (approx. 1 hour). Hot shower! Real bed! You’ve earned this.

Afternoon: Rest and relax by the pool. Reflect on your achievement.

Evening: Celebration dinner at a local restaurant (optional, not included).
