Southern Tanzania

Discover the safari landscape from land and water.

Another side of Tanzania

Nyerere encompasses part of the former northern Selous Game Reserve and is shaped by the Rufiji River and surrounding lakes. Floodplains and woodland create a different atmosphere from the northern grasslands. It suits travellers who want their safari to include a variety of landscapes and ways of exploring.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR TIME

Things to do and discover.

Rufiji River & boat safaris

A guided boat outing can bring a different view of riverbanks, waterbirds, hippos and crocodiles. The route depends on water conditions and the operator’s authorised area. Confirm how the boat experience fits with your accommodation and other activities, and follow the guide’s instructions throughout.

Floodplain & woodland drives

Game drives explore habitats that feel very different from the northern plains. Look for giraffes, elephants, buffalo and predators, while leaving time for birds and smaller details. African wild dogs occur in the landscape, but finding them is a possibility rather than a promised inclusion.

Tracks, plants & quieter details

A ranger-escorted walk can shift attention to the ground and the surrounding ecology. It requires separate arrangements and suitability checks. A balanced stay can combine time on foot, water and in a vehicle, provided each activity is confirmed for your dates.

A JOURNEY SHAPED BY THE SEASON

When to visit.

June–October

A popular safari window

Drier conditions are often chosen for exploring by vehicle. Plan boating around the current river conditions as well as the calendar.

November–February

A changing river landscape

Rain can refresh woodland and floodplains. Ask which activities are operating and allow flexibility for weather and access.

March–May

Wet-season logistics

Road conditions and camp closures can shape what is practical. Our team coordinates your accommodation, access and activities for the season.

These seasonal patterns are a starting point. Weather, wildlife movements and activity availability vary; we will plan around your dates.

CONNECT YOUR JOURNEY

Getting there.

Road access is possible from Dar es Salaam, with the route depending on the entrance and camp. Flights serve selected airstrips such as Mtemere, followed by a vehicle transfer. Share your arrival time and onward plans so the team can compare realistic connections rather than assuming every southern park is close by.

A PLACE TO SLOW DOWN

Stays selected for you.

Tell us where you would like to go, your dates, budget and preferred comfort level. Our Tanzania-based safari specialists will recommend well-located accommodation, check availability and arrange your stays around the journey. Your personal proposal will include the selected properties, rooms and meal plans.

THE DETAILS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Plan your visit, your way.

Look along the waterways

Hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds are part of the river environment, while elephants, buffalo and predators inhabit the wider park. Wild dogs are a possible highlight, never a guaranteed sighting. An experienced guide helps you read the landscape and notice more than the most familiar animals.

Ask about a boat safari

A boat excursion can offer a different viewpoint on the river and its edges. It is not automatically included with every camp or itinerary. Confirm the departure location, season, water conditions and suitability for your group, alongside your game drives and any other proposed activities.

Connect the south and the islands

Nyerere can be discussed with Ruaha for a longer safari or with Zanzibar for a wildlife-and-beach holiday. Check the actual flight routing, luggage limits and transfers rather than assuming that a short distance on a map means a simple connection. Seasonal access and accommodation availability shape the final route.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Your questions, answered.

Are Nyerere and Selous the same name for one park?

Nyerere National Park was formed from part of the former Selous Game Reserve. The names should not be treated as interchangeable for every camp or location.

Can we combine a boat trip and game drives?

Potentially, depending on your accommodation, dates and local arrangements. Request both in the enquiry and have the activities confirmed before booking.
