BLUE EAGLESAFARIS
ZANZIBAR COLLECTION
Zanzibar’s history is complex, fascinating, and written in its architecture, its people, and its scars.
THE EXPERIENCE
Zanzibar’s history is complex, fascinating, and written in its architecture, its people, and its scars. This itinerary delves deep—beyond the surface to understand the island’s role as a trading hub, the horrors of the slave trade, the influence of Omani sultans, and the living traditions that continue today.
You’ll spend three nights in Stone Town, allowing time for multiple tours, museum visits, and conversations with locals. This is for travelers who want to understand, not just see.
THE JOURNEY, DAY BY DAY
Explore the daily activities, meals and stays below. Accommodation or similar alternatives, optional experiences and the final price are confirmed in your personal proposal.
Arrive at Zanzibar Airport. Transfer to your Stone Town hotel.
Afternoon: Free time to orient yourself. Stone Town is a maze—get lost intentionally.
Late Afternoon (4:30 PM): Introductory walking tour. Visit the Old Fort, House of Wonders, and Forodhani Gardens.
Sunset: Forodhani Gardens food market. Sample local street food.
Morning (9:00 AM – 12:30 PM): Slave Trade History Tour
This tour confronts Zanzibar’s darkest chapter:
Site | Significance |
|---|---|
Slave Market Site | Where enslaved people were bought and sold |
Anglican Cathedral | Built on the site of the slave market—the altar stands where the whipping post once stood |
Slave Chambers | Underground cells where up to 50 people were held in chains |
Memorial | Sculptures honoring those who suffered |
Your guide will explain the scale of the East African slave trade, the journey from the interior, and the abolition efforts.
Lunch: At a local restaurant.
Afternoon (2:30 PM – 5:00 PM): Peace Museum & Cultural Exchange
Visit the Peace Museum to understand post-slavery Zanzibar. Then, optional visit to a local NGO working with descendants of enslaved people—if interested, your guide can arrange a conversation.
Evening: Dinner and reflection. This is heavy content—give yourself time to process.
Morning (9:00 AM – 12:30 PM): Sultan’s Zanzibar Tour
The Omani Sultans ruled Zanzibar for over 200 years, leaving a profound mark:
Site | Significance |
|---|---|
Palace Museum | Former Sultan’s palace, now museum of royal life |
Hamamni Persian Baths | 19th-century public baths built by Omani architects |
Old Dispensary | Stunning example of Zanzibari architecture, recently restored |
Mtoni Palace Ruins | Original Sultan’s palace (optional, requires transport) |
Lunch: At a Swahili restaurant.
Afternoon (2:30 PM – 5:00 PM): Architecture Walk
Zanzibar’s famous carved wooden doors tell stories of the families who lived behind them. Your guide will explain:
Evening: Dinner at a traditional Zanzibari restaurant. Try ndizi na nyama (plantains with meat) or biriani ya kuku (chicken biryani).
Morning (9:00 AM – 12:30 PM): Spice Tour
No visit to Zanzibar is complete without understanding its spice heritage. Visit a working farm to see vanilla, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and more. Taste fresh spices and tropical fruits.
Lunch: Included at the spice farm.
Afternoon: Transfer to Zanzibar Airport for departure.
