Southern Tanzania

Open savannah and an inviting southern safari.

Open country and a southern welcome

The Mkata floodplain is a defining part of Mikumi, with grassland, scattered acacias and surrounding woodland. The open scenery encourages you to pause, scan the distance and watch animals move through their habitat. A slower drive can reveal far more than a quick crossing of the park.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR TIME

Things to do and discover.

Explore the Mkata floodplain

The open landscape gives a broad view of grazing animals and the changing sky. Watch for giraffes, zebra, buffalo and other wildlife, with time for your guide to follow activity. Early and late light can make even a familiar scene feel completely different.

Pools, birds & smaller moments

Slow down near accessible pools and wetland habitats for hippos and waterbirds. Bring binoculars and let the guide explain what is happening beyond the larger mammals. A varied day can include open plains, acacia woodland and quieter observation stops.

A southern-circuit beginning

Use Mikumi as a focused short safari or part of a longer southern route. If walking or another additional activity interests you, request a confirmed arrangement in a designated area. Keep transfer days separate from full park days when comparing programmes.

A JOURNEY SHAPED BY THE SEASON

When to visit.

June–October

Drier wildlife viewing

Dry-season conditions can make remaining water a useful wildlife focus. This is a practical period to discuss a wider southern overland journey.

November–February

Green plains & birdlife

Rain changes the grassland and seasonal wetlands. Enjoy the colour and birds while allowing flexibility in the driving route.

March–May

Plan around rain

Our team checks seasonal road conditions and accommodation availability. Wet conditions can increase transfer times.

These seasonal patterns are a starting point. Weather, wildlife movements and activity availability vary; we will plan around your dates.

CONNECT YOUR JOURNEY

Getting there.

Mikumi is connected by road with Dar es Salaam and Morogoro, but traffic and the final route can make this a long travel day. Confirm any flight service and airstrip transfer for your dates. A visit from the coast should allow enough actual wildlife time to justify the journey, especially on a short holiday.

A PLACE TO SLOW DOWN

Stays selected for you.

Tell us where you would like to go, your dates, budget and preferred comfort level. Our Tanzania-based safari specialists will recommend well-located accommodation, check availability and arrange your stays around the journey. Your personal proposal will include the selected properties, rooms and meal plans.

THE DETAILS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Plan your visit, your way.

A varied wildlife day

Giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and elephants are among the animals associated with Mikumi. Lions and varied birdlife add to the possibilities. Wildlife changes with time of day, rainfall and natural movement, so approach the visit as an exploration rather than a promise of particular sightings.

Plan the road journey honestly

Mikumi can be approached by road from Dar es Salaam via the Morogoro area. Journey time depends on your starting point, traffic and conditions. A same-day return can leave little time to enjoy the park; compare that with an overnight option before deciding what fits your holiday.

Make it part of a southern story

Within a longer itinerary, discuss whether Mikumi complements Nyerere, Ruaha or a separately arranged Udzungwa visit. The best combination depends on your interests and available travel days. Keep the route achievable and confirm the cost and timing of every extra stop.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Your questions, answered.

Is Mikumi only a short stop?

It can be a destination in its own right. An overnight visit gives more flexibility than a brief stop during a long transfer.

Does the linked southern itinerary include every park on this page?

No. It is a starting point for discussion. Your written proposal must specifically list Mikumi and any other requested additions.
