THE TANZANIA TRAVEL GUIDE

Your first safari.
Beautifully prepared.

Practical answers to help you choose a route, understand your quote and prepare for a Tanzania journey.

FROM OUR TEAM IN ARUSHA

A little knowledge. A lot to look forward to.

You don’t need to have every detail worked out. Start with what excites you, use this guide for the essentials, and let our local team shape the journey around you.

Which safari route suits you?

More destinations do not automatically make a better safari. Compare driving days, wildlife time and nights in each place. The examples below come from our existing collection; your final programme can be discussed with the team.

For trekking, distinguish mountain days from the full programme, which can include arrival and departure days. Discuss acclimatisation, fitness and the route with the team. Compare mountain programmes.

When should you travel?

Start with your priorities: wildlife, a mountain trek, photography or time at the beach. Tanzania’s conditions vary by region, and migration sightings depend on natural movements.

June–October

Generally drier conditions. Wildlife often gathers around remaining water sources.

November–December

Short rains can bring greener landscapes and muddy tracks.

March–May

The long-rain period. Check access and camp availability for your route.

For January and February, or a particular migration experience, ask which area fits your dates. There is no guaranteed day or location for a river crossing.

What does a safari day feel like?

A safari has its own rhythm. Your guide adapts the day to your route, the conditions and your interests; the outline below is an example, not a fixed timetable.

01

Early start

Set out in the softer morning light, with breakfast arrangements agreed with your guide.

02

Time to pause

A picnic or a return to camp gives you time to eat, rest and enjoy the surroundings.

03

Afternoon exploring

Continue your wildlife drive before returning for dinner and a conversation about tomorrow.

What should you pack?

Pack for changing temperatures and time outdoors. Keep everyday essentials close at hand, and check the luggage allowance for every flight on your route.

  • Comfortable layers and a warm top for early starts
  • Sun protection, a hat and practical footwear
  • A camera, spare batteries and binoculars if you have them
  • Personal medicines and copies of travel documents

Where will you stay?

Tell us where you would like to go, your dates, budget and preferred comfort level. Our Tanzania-based safari specialists will recommend well-located accommodation, check availability and arrange your stays around the journey. Your personal proposal will include the selected properties, rooms and meal plans.

How will you get around?

Kilimanjaro International Airport is an arrival option to discuss for a northern Tanzania journey. Confirm your start point and airport with Blue Eagle before buying flights. An international arrival, a domestic airstrip and a lodge transfer are separate parts of your itinerary.

  • Ask which arrival and departure airports best match your route.
  • Allow time for immigration, luggage and transfers before onward travel.
  • For safari-and-beach trips, confirm the mainland-to-Zanzibar connection and both airport transfers.
  • Ask the airline for the current baggage allowance and bag type on every flight, especially small-aircraft sectors.
  • Confirm who meets you, where the meeting point is and how to contact the team if your flight changes.

Can you stay connected?

Connection and charging facilities vary between properties and routes. Before departure, our team will confirm the arrangements for your selected stays and advise on keeping essential devices charged. Download important documents for offline use and leave room for time away from your screen.

What goes into your safari quote?

The rates on our itinerary cards are indicative starting points. Dates, group size, accommodation, transport and included activities affect the final quote. Compare proposals on the same basis rather than on the headline price alone.

Ask for a clear breakdown

  • Named accommodation or the agreed alternative, room type and meals.
  • Guide arrangements, vehicle use, airport transfers and domestic flights where applicable.
  • Park entry, activity fees and the experiences listed in your programme.
  • Items charged separately, such as optional activities, drinks, tips or international flights.
  • Currency, payment schedule, cancellation terms and arrangements if plans change.

Tell us your comfortable spending range and the parts of the experience you value most. This helps the team discuss practical choices.

What should you arrange before travelling?

Passports & entry

Check requirements for your nationality, passport and transit route before booking. Use Tanzania Immigration for current visa information and application guidance.

How can you travel thoughtfully?

Follow your guide’s instructions around wildlife, keep noise low and never feed animals. For cultural visits, ask permission before photographing people and let your hosts guide the experience.

Discuss how a visit is hosted and which costs support local participation. Let the team know if you prefer quieter encounters or want to understand the background of an activity before adding it.

Children’s ages, food preferences and mobility needs all help shape a workable itinerary. Share these early so the team can confirm suitable arrangements.
