Forest, lakes and the slopes of Mount Meru give Arusha National Park a distinctive place in a Tanzania journey. It can be an introduction to the region or a thoughtful addition to a longer stay.

Arusha & Mount Meru
Forest, lakes and the slopes of Mount Meru.
A greener introduction to Tanzania
Arusha National Park brings together the slopes of Mount Meru, forest, the Momella Lakes and the Ngurdoto crater landscape. It is a different experience from the wide plains of a classic savannah safari. Forest wildlife and birdwatching can become the focus here, with black-and-white colobus monkeys among the park’s notable animals.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR TIME
Things to do and discover.
01
Forest & crater viewpoints
Explore forest roads and the Ngurdoto landscape, watching for colobus monkeys and other forest wildlife. The appeal is the variety of habitats in a day: wooded slopes, clearings and broad views, rather than the same wildlife experience as the Serengeti plains.
02
Momella Lakes & birdwatching
Make time for the lakes and their changing colours and birdlife. A slower drive with binoculars brings the smaller details into focus. Ask about any additional lake activity separately, since permissions, conditions and arrangements differ from an ordinary game drive.
03
Walk or climb with purpose
A guided walk can add a closer look at tracks, plants and the landscape. A Mount Meru ascent is a separate multi-day programme with mountain accommodation and dedicated preparation. Tell us which level of activity you want before combining the two ideas.
Another chapter around ArushaDiscuss a separate coffee experience outside the park, with time to enjoy the visit.
A JOURNEY SHAPED BY THE SEASON
When to visit.
June–October
Drier walks & drives
Drier months can suit a mix of driving and guided walking. Forest shade and altitude still call for a layer and footwear suited to uneven ground.
January–February
Another trekking window
Often considered for mountain plans alongside the longer dry season. Visibility and weather can still change, so keep views of Meru and Kilimanjaro as a possible bonus.
March–May & November–December
Lush forest conditions
Rain makes the forest especially green and can affect walking conditions. Confirm the day’s activities and carry the clothing recommended for your chosen outing.
These seasonal patterns are a starting point. Weather, wildlife movements and activity availability vary; we will plan around your dates.
CONNECT YOUR JOURNEY
Getting there.
Arusha town is a convenient base, but actual travel depends on your hotel, traffic and park entry point. A visit can precede a longer northern safari. Avoid treating an international arrival or departure day as unlimited sightseeing time: flight schedules and time to rest should shape the plan.
A PLACE TO SLOW DOWN
Stays selected for you.
Tell us where you would like to go, your dates, budget and preferred comfort level. Our Tanzania-based safari specialists will recommend well-located accommodation, check availability and arrange your stays around the journey. Your personal proposal will include the selected properties, rooms and meal plans.
THE DETAILS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Plan your visit, your way.
Choose the experience you want
A game drive, a guided walk and a multi-day mountain trek are different ways to experience this area. Tell us whether you want a relaxed introduction, a more active day or a dedicated Meru programme. Walks and other activities need suitable arrangements; request confirmation of the guide, permissions, age suitability and any extra charges.
Allow a proper day, not just spare hours
The park can be considered before or after a wider northern safari, but planning around an arrival requires care. Share your flight time, likely tiredness after travel and hotel location. We suggest a full day when possible rather than assuming that a few hours between flights will be enough for an enjoyable visit.
Mount Meru is a separate journey
A day in the park is not the same as climbing Mount Meru. For a mountain holiday, compare the complete programme, daily walking, overnight arrangements and time for preparation. Our Mount Meru itineraries explain the scheduled days; ask the team to confirm the support and equipment appropriate to your chosen route.
Make space for Arusha itself
If you would enjoy a coffee experience around Arusha, discuss it as a separate stop outside the park programme. The photo below is inspiration for that additional chapter, not a park activity included by default. A quieter day in town, a cultural experience and a wildlife day can complement each other when the schedule leaves enough time.
BEFORE YOU BOOK
Your questions, answered.
Is this a substitute for a Serengeti safari?
It offers a different landscape and style of visit. Choose it for forest, lakes and Meru scenery rather than expecting the same experience as the plains.
Can I add it to an existing itinerary?
Ask for an extra day or a revised route. The safari cards below are ideas to discuss; a park visit is only included when your programme specifically lists it.
