Baobab silhouettes and the Tarangire River give this park a character of its own. It is a compelling first chapter in a northern Tanzania safari, with elephant encounters among its best-known attractions.

Elephant country, shaped by a river.
A safari with a different character
Tarangire’s baobabs and river landscape create a distinctive setting for a northern Tanzania safari. Elephants are among its best-known attractions, but take time to notice the smaller details too: birds in the trees, tracks along the road and the changing shape of the landscape. A rewarding game drive is about observing what is happening, not simply ticking off species.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR TIME
Things to do and discover.
01
Watch the river
Follow the Tarangire River and look for the animals drawn to its banks. Elephant families can provide absorbing viewing, from calves keeping close to adults to a herd approaching water. Let the guide choose a respectful viewing position and give the scene time to unfold.
02
Baobabs & changing habitats
Look beyond a single wildlife sighting to the park’s baobabs, woodland and open country. The trees add scale to landscape photographs and shade for animals. An overnight stay gives you more flexibility to explore at different times of day.
03
Birdlife & guided exploration
Bring binoculars for birds along the river and in the woodland. If a guided walk interests you, ask about the designated area, guide, age requirements and additional arrangements. Daytime vehicle safaris and walking activities should be clearly distinguished in your proposal.

A JOURNEY SHAPED BY THE SEASON
When to visit.
June–October
Water draws wildlife
As conditions become drier, river habitats can be a productive focus. This is a popular period, so discuss accommodation early if you have fixed dates.
November–February
Fresh grass & birdlife
Rain transforms the colour of the landscape and wildlife may spread out. Choose this period for the overall habitat experience rather than expecting dry-season concentrations.
March–May
The greener months
Longer rains can affect tracks and daily plans. Our team checks camp availability and plans a flexible route through the park.
These seasonal patterns are a starting point. Weather, wildlife movements and activity availability vary; we will plan around your dates.
CONNECT YOUR JOURNEY
Getting there.
Tarangire is usually approached by road from Arusha via the northern safari road network. It makes a natural first or final wildlife stop, with onward travel towards Manyara or Karatu. Flying may be possible via a suitable airstrip, subject to the service and camp arrangements. Compare the complete door-to-door journey rather than flight time alone.
A PLACE TO SLOW DOWN
Stays selected for you.
Tell us where you would like to go, your dates, budget and preferred comfort level. Our Tanzania-based safari specialists will recommend well-located accommodation, check availability and arrange your stays around the journey. Your personal proposal will include the selected properties, rooms and meal plans.
THE DETAILS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Plan your visit, your way.
A natural first chapter
Tarangire and Ngorongoro make a useful pairing when time is limited, with very different scenery on consecutive parts of the journey. On a longer trip, continue to the Serengeti rather than rushing back between parks. Families can discuss shorter drives and rest time; photographers can request a pace that leaves room to wait for a scene.
BEFORE YOU BOOK
Your questions, answered.
Is Tarangire only worth visiting in the dry season?
No. Different conditions offer different landscapes and wildlife patterns. Discuss your dates and what you hope to experience.
Can it fit into a short safari?
Yes. Our Short Safari Escape combines Tarangire and Ngorongoro. Review the daily programme and confirm your arrival arrangements.
