High-Altitude Start – Dramatic Views

7 Days | Challenging • Less Common

Overview

The Shira Route begins at a higher elevation than any other route—you’re driven to Shira Gate at 3,600m, bypassing the lower rainforest entirely. This offers dramatic views from the very first day but also presents acclimatization challenges due to the high starting altitude.

This route is less common than Lemosho (which shares much of the same path after Shira) but rewards with stunning scenery and a true sense of wilderness. You’ll traverse the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus in the world, before joining the Machame route at Lava Tower.

Important Note: Due to the high starting altitude, this route is best suited for trekkers with some high-altitude experience or those who have spent extra days acclimatizing beforehand.

Itinerary Details

Day 1: Arrival – Moshi

Jambo! Welcome to Kilimanjaro.

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Your Blue Eagle representative will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi (approx. 45 minutes).

Afternoon: Meet your lead guide for a full briefing. We’ll check your gear, answer questions, and discuss the days ahead. Your guide will pay special attention to the high-altitude start of this route and discuss acclimatization strategies.

Evening: Welcome dinner and early rest. Tomorrow begins at high altitude—rest is essential.

  • Accommodation:Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort or similar (Moshi)
  • Meals:Dinner
  • Elevation:3,600m → 3,600m
  • Distance:Minimal (short walk)
  • Hiking Time:1-2 hours
  • Habitat:Moorland
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Morning: After breakfast, drive to Shira Gate (approx. 3-4 hours). The journey takes you through rural villages and farmlands, then up a rough road onto the Shira Plateau. The drive itself is spectacular, with expanding views as you gain altitude.

Registration: Complete park formalities at Shira Gate. The altitude here is 3,600m—higher than many camps on other routes. You’ll feel the thin air immediately.

The Trail: A short, gentle walk from the gate to Shira 1 Camp. This is intentionally brief—your body needs time to adjust to the altitude.

Arrival Shira 1 Camp: Shira 1 sits on the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus in the world. The setting is dramatic—wide-open spaces, volcanic rocks, and views of Kibo Peak ahead.

Afternoon: Rest is absolutely essential. Your body is at 3,600m after coming from near sea level—this is a significant shock. Hydrate, rest, and move very slowly.

Health Check: Your guide will monitor your oxygen levels frequently today. Report any symptoms immediately.

Evening: Dinner and early bedtime. The altitude may make sleep difficult—this is normal.

  • Accommodation:Shira 1 Camp (tented)
  • Elevation:3,600m → 3,850m
  • Distance:7 km
  • Hiking Time:3-4 hours
  • Habitat:Moorland
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Morning: After breakfast, begin your traverse of the Shira Plateau. The trail is relatively flat, allowing your body to continue acclimatizing without excessive physical stress.

The Landscape: The plateau is otherworldly—flat, expansive, and dotted with giant lobelias and groundsels. Volcanic rocks litter the landscape. On clear days, you can see the entire massif: Kibo ahead, Mawenzi to the east, and the plateau stretching behind.

Views: Look back for stunning views of Mount Meru floating on the clouds. The Rift Valley escarpment may be visible on the horizon.

Lunch: Picnic en route at a scenic spot.

Arrival Shira 2 Camp: This camp offers even better views of Kibo. The mountain seems close enough to touch—deceptively so, as you’re still days away.

Afternoon: Rest and continue acclimatizing. Your guide may lead a short optional walk to higher ground (climb high, sleep low).

  • Accommodation:Shira 2 Camp (tented)
  • Elevation:3,850m → 4,600m → 3,960m
  • Distance:10 km
  • Hiking Time:6-7 hours
  • Habitat:Semi-desert
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The Critical Acclimatization Day

Morning: Today follows the “climb high, sleep low” principle. You’ll ascend to Lava Tower (4,600m) for lunch, then descend to Barranco Camp.

The Trail: The landscape becomes increasingly barren—rocky, dusty, and dramatic. Vegetation thins as you gain altitude. You’ll notice the air getting thinner with every step.

Lava Tower (4,600m): This volcanic rock formation towers above the landscape. You’ll have lunch here, definitely feeling the effects of altitude. Headaches, shortness of breath, and mild nausea are normal—listen to your body and communicate with your guide.

Descent to Barranco: After lunch, descend to Barranco Camp. The drop in elevation brings relief and better oxygen. You’ll feel noticeably better within an hour of descending.

Barranco Valley: Your camp sits in a stunning valley surrounded by giant groundsels. The famous Barranco Wall looms above—you’ll climb it tomorrow.

  • Accommodation:Barranco Camp (tented)
  • Elevation:3,960m → 4,050m
  • Distance:6 km
  • Hiking Time:4-5 hours
  • Habitat:Alpine desert
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Morning: The Barranco Wall

After breakfast, tackle the famous Barranco Wall. This is not a technical climb—it’s a steep scramble with good handholds. Your guide will show you the safest route.

The Climb: The wall takes about 1-2 hours to ascend. At the top, you’re rewarded with spectacular views across the valley and back toward Mount Meru. The sense of achievement is wonderful.

The Trail Beyond: After the wall, the trail undulates through alpine desert, crossing several small valleys before descending slightly to Karanga Camp.

Karanga Camp: This small camp sits in a valley with views of the glaciers above. It’s the last water point before the summit.

Afternoon: Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit push. Your guide will brief you on what to expect.

  • Accommodation:Karanga Camp (tented)
  • Elevation:4,050m → 4,640m
  • Distance:4 km
  • Hiking Time:4-5 hours
  • Habitat:Alpine desert
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Morning: A short day to rest before the summit. The trail climbs steadily to Barafu Camp.

Barafu Camp: “Barafu” means “ice” in Swahili. The camp is rocky and exposed, sitting on a ridge with stunning views of the summit and the valleys below. There’s no water here—everything is carried up.

Afternoon: Rest is essential. Your guide will brief you on summit night:

  • What to wear (layers—thermal base, mid-layer, insulated jacket, waterproof shell)
  • What to pack in your daypack (headlamp with fresh batteries, 2-3 liters of water, snacks, camera)
  • What to expect (cold, dark, slow going, possible nausea)

Early Dinner: Eat by 5 PM. Try to sleep by 6 PM. Summit night begins at midnight.

What to Prepare:

  • Lay out your summit clothes in the order you’ll put them on
  • Fill your water bottles (they’ll freeze if left empty—keep them in your sleeping bag)
  • Pack your daypack with everything you’ll need
  • Use the toilet before trying to sleep
  • Accommodation:Barafu Camp (tented)
  • Elevation:4,640m → 5,895m → 3,100m
  • Distance:15 km total
  • Hiking Time:12-16 hours
  • Habitat:Arctic to rainforest
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Summit Day – The Moment You’ve Waited For

11:30 PM – Wake Up: Tea and biscuits are served. Dress quickly—it’s freezing cold. Your guide will check that everyone is properly dressed and ready.

Midnight – Departure: Headlamps on, you begin the final ascent. The path is steep switchbacks up loose volcanic scree. Move slowly—”pole pole” is now your mantra. Your guide sets a rhythm: 20-30 steps, then a brief rest. Repeat for hours.

The Ascent (5-7 hours):

  • 1:00 AM:First rest break. Drink water, eat a snack. The stars are incredible—the Southern Cross hangs overhead.
  • 3:00 AM:Another break. The cold is intense. Hand warmers help.
  • 5:00 AM:The sky begins to lighten in the east. You can see the summit ahead.
  • 6:00 AM:Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim. The sunrise paints the clouds below in shades of orange and pink. You’ve made it to the top of the world—almost.

The Final Push (1-2 hours): From Stella Point, follow the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak. The trail is snow-covered and spectacular. Glaciers loom on your right. The altitude makes every step an effort, but the goal is in sight.

7:30 AM – 8:30 AM (approx): Uhuru Peak – 5,895 meters. You’ve reached the roof of Africa. Celebrate, take photos, breathe. Your guide will help with photos and share this moment with you. Look out over the clouds, the glaciers, the endless plains below. This is what you came for.

Time at Summit: 15-20 minutes maximum. The altitude and cold make extended stays dangerous.

Descent Begins: The way down is faster but hard on knees. You’ll descend the same route, sliding slightly in the scree.

Return to Barafu Camp (2-3 hours): Rest, rehydrate, and have a light lunch. You’ll be exhausted but euphoric.

Continue to Mweka Camp (3-4 hours): The descent continues through alpine desert and moorland to Mweka Camp in the rainforest. The air thickens with oxygen as you descend.

Evening: Celebration dinner at Mweka Camp. Share stories with fellow climbers. You’ve earned it.

  • Accommodation:Mweka Camp (tented)
  • Elevation:3,100m → 1,650m
  • Distance:10 km
  • Hiking Time:3-4 hours
  • Habitat:Rainforest
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch

Final Descent: After breakfast, continue down through lush rainforest. The air is thick with oxygen, and the sounds of birds fill the forest. Your legs may feel like rubber, but your heart is light.

The Rainforest: Look for colobus monkeys in the canopy, their black and white coats easy to spot against the green.

Arrival Mweka Gate: Complete park formalities and receive your summit certificate:

  • Gold Certificate:If you reached Uhuru Peak
  • Green Certificate:If you reached Stella Point

Celebration: Your driver meets you and transfers you back to your Moshi hotel (approx. 1 hour). Hot shower! Real bed! You’ve earned this.

Evening: Celebration dinner with your guide (if still in Moshi). Raise a glass to your achievement.

  • Accommodation:Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort (Moshi)
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel. Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight, or continue to safari or Zanzibar.

  • Meals:Breakfast
